I have very fine African hair that poofs at the sight of moisture. What can I put in it to tame it?

My hair immediately curls if I add gel, so I cannot do that but sometimes I want to slick back my hair, but most of the products on the market are water based and will cause my hair to immediately poof. What are some good alternatives?

Oil based products you can apply to roots. Sorry, I can't name any of the top of my head. Either that or getting a perm will help.
